Things to Remember

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, October 20, 2023

Today’s Text: Revelation 2:1-7

Key Verse: Revelation 2:5 (KJV): “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.”

There are are always things to remember. I can remember those days before the shows get weird—days of amazing soap operas in Nigeria—when we saw TV series such as Things to Remember, The Village Headmaster, Things Fall Apart, Tales by Moonlight, New Masquerade, Cock Crow at Dawn, Mirror in the Sun, Ripples and others. Those were secular, right?! What about Emi fun Emi (Life for Life), Agbara Nla (Ultimate Power), Ide Esu, The Beginning of the End, The Unprofitable Servant, Perilous Times, One Careless Night, The Blood Covenant, etc.

As humans, we are prone to forget. That’s why the charge to remember runs throughout scriptures. It is actually used 352 times in the Bible—more than “fear not.” Im the text before us today, it is an open call for each Christian his first love for God. How we arduously search for God’s truth; seek Christ to be revealed to us; and our eyes are fixed only on Him. But somehow, things have changed with time and many have gone busy. The pursuit of money and daily bread have replaced the search for truth—except for some spare time to go through religious motions and activities. God wants us to remember where we used to be.

These are no day to pretend. There are undeniable evidences that we have abandoned our first love for God. That is why the risen Lord calls us to "remember!" When we remember the place from where we fell, we’d remember our fist love. We’d remember the peace and the joy and the satisfaction that we shared, which is only found in a close relationship with Jesus Christ, our Lord. We’d remember that life is about loving others and sacrifices for the kingdom. We’d remember who we are in union with Christ Jesus—ambassador and witness to great secrets of His Kingdom.

Quote for the Day: “When a believer in Christ remembers his first love, he is brought to a point of repentance that leads to a return.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, my prayer today is for a full restoration in my life. I submit my life to Your ever-loving Will and revival. It is You who makes all things new and brings beauty from our ashes: bind up my broken heart, proclaim freedom over my life, and release me to a restoration of true joy of salvation, a the renewal of right spirit within — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
