Trust the Lord, not the Sword

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 21, 2023

Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 17:33-50

Key Verses: 1 Samuel 17:47 (ESV): “And that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

One of the greatest flaws of man is his trust in wrong things of life. A story was told of a wrecked cruise ship that ran into a terrible storm at the coast of South Africa in 1991. Usually, a ship’s captain is trusted to protect his vessel, crew and passengers. But during that calamity, the ship began to sink but the captain failed the trust of his people. He abandon ship and left them without notice, and without alerting them of the impending disaster. The passenger eventually found help, but from a different quarter.

Sometimes those we look up to for help can let us down. In this text, the whole nation of Israel look up to King Saul and his military might during the days when they faced the belligerent ridicule of/from the Philistine army and their giant general Goliath. But instead of defending the people, they responded with fear and timidity. But God taught his people that He does not save by military might. But He can deliver you and deliver a nation through the untutored hand of a shepherd boy. So, whatever you are going through, the tide of the battle will turn if and when you learn not to look at your sword(s) or those of your enemies; but to the strength of the living God.

Quote for the Day: “The best direction of disappointment is downward and the best way never to be disappointed is upward. Each of us can determine our result.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me strength when I am weak, love when I feel forsaken, courage when I am afraid, wisdom when I feel foolish, comfort when I am alone, hope when I feel rejected, and peace when I am in turmoil — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
