Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, August 26, 2024
Today’s Text: Proverbs 23:19-25
Key Verse: Proverbs 23:23 (ESV): "Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding."
We have before us an exhortation to give acquiring and retaining truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding anythingit could take. To buy is to acquire or possess. As such giving the expression a clear need to actively seek, acquire and retain truth as a valuable possession. Yes! Retain it. Do not sell it. To sell is to surrender or dispose of a thing. The phrase is an admonition or warning not to compromise, surrender, or devaluing truth.
Wisdom is mostly personified in Scriptures, and he possesses the ability to give discernment and apply truth in practical ways. Any human that acquires wisdom posseses skills, insight, and discernment. That is why it is an indirect representation of the person of Christ, who is the wisdom of God, as stated in 1 Corinthians 1:24, "But to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." He embodies the wisdom of God as the Logos, the Word of God, the embodiment of His (God's) thoughts and plans (John 1:1-14).
He reveals God's character: Through His teachings, miracles, and sacrifice, Jesus shows us what God is like (John 14:9-10) and who man should be; providing guidance for living, and teaching us how to love, forgive, and serve (Matthew 5-7).
He is the truth: the ultimate expression of God's secrets, love and character. The idea of buy the truth, therefore, means, do everything possible to know and hold unto Him. And of course, by embracing Jesus as the truth and the wisdom of God, gain deeper understanding of God's nature and character. And, we receive the power and wisdom for living.
Would you seek God's truth as you traverse a world where lies, deception and ignorance are rampant? Would you cherish, seek and embrace Jesus, the truth and never let go if Him? Would you seek Him above all else; value Him more than material possessions or fleeting gains? The admonition today is that we value and hold onto truth, even when it's difficult or unpopular. Do you value this truth enough to be excited to share it with others, without compromise or distortion? What are some areas in your life where you may be compromising or neglecting truth? Do you value, seek and share truth in your relationships and decisions? Ask yourself these questions today so that you don't suffer the consequences of selling out or compromising truth, and what are the benefits of holding onto it?
Action Steps: Take a moment to reflect on your values and priorities. Make a conscious decision to seek God's truth. Hold unto life.
Quote for the Day: "Truth is not a concept; and wisdom is not an idea. Jesus is the truth. He is the wisdom of God. Knowing Him sets us free." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing your truth and wisdom to us through Jesus Christ. Help us to seek, embrace and hold Him as the embodiment of your wisdom and guidance in our daily lives — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
