Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, October 6, 2024
Today’s Text: Matthew 5:2-12
Key Verse: Matthew 5:11 (ESV): "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."
Today, October 6, we remember William Tyndale, a courageous Bible translator who gave his life to make God's Word accessible to all. His memory continues to challenge believers of all ages to stand firm in faith, even in the face of adversity. Tyndale's passion was to provide a Bible for the common people, breaking the chains of ignorance and oppression. He labored tirelessly, translating from Hebrew and Greek into English, despite fierce opposition.
In 1535 he was betrayed by a friend, taken prisoner to the castle of Vilford, and continued to work on his translation. He was unable to finish his work because he was sentenced to die a heretic's death: Strangulation and burning at the stake. On October 6, 1536 he cried out his last words, which still echo today: "Lord, open the King of England's eyes!" In the example of Christ's "Father forgivr them for they know not whatnthey are doing," Tyndale's uncommon faith in the face of death, and his prayer for his persecutors, demonstrated Christ-like love, which turned the flames and darkness that surrounded him to an illuminating light of his unwavering faith that day and today.
As you meditate on Matthew 5:11, let Tyndale's story challenge and encourage you to stand firm in your faith. Like him, we may face opposition for what we believe. Like him, we must draw strength from our conviction that God'sword is true. He did not only believe God's word; but his work made it accessible. We, too, must share Scripture with others, spreading hope and truth. We must persevere through adversity even as Tyndale stayed faithful amidst challenges and continued translating even in prison. And lastly, his final words aligns with Christ's character, which teaches us to pray for our enemies and to love and intercede for those who oppose us.
Action Steps: Read and meditate on Scripture daily. Share God's Word with someone this week. Pray for those who oppose our faith. Support organizations translating the Bible into languages worldwide.
Quote for the Day: "We do better in spreading God's word when we are resolved that the persecution we face can only silence our voice, not God's word." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, as we remember and thank You for William Tyndale's remarkable legacy, help us to stand firm in our faith. Help us to share Your Word with others and persevere through adversity. Teach us to love and pray for those who oppose us. Lord, let our hearts be stirred to cherish Your Word, proclaim Your truth, love our enemies, stand firm in the face of persecution, and please, Lord, ignite a fire within us that will fuel our passion for Your glory — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
