Two Opposing Alliances

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, April 30, 2024

Today’s Text: Romans 8:26-30

Key Verse: James 4:4 (ESV): "You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."

In a world where friendship and belonging are highly valued, James' warning may seem a little harsh. Yet, he highlights the stark reality of choosing between two opposing allegiances. The "world" which in context refers to any system, driven by self-centeredness, materialism, and sin, that rebels against God. When we befriend the world, we adopt its values, priorities, and practices, which are inherently opposed to God's nature and kingdom values.

It's like a soldier who joins the military but secretly collaborates with the enemy. Such soldier may enjoy the shortlived benefits of both sides, but his loyalty is divided, and actions treacherous. This illustration is similar to Jesus' idea of no man can serve two masters. When we pursue friendship with the world, we compromise our loyalty to God and risk becoming enemies of the One who loves us most.

Please note the painful epithet, "Ye adulteresses," which James used to strike the key-note of his appeal. Why is this the case? The reason is simple: the system of the world is enmity to God, and we got to choose one. The world moves us to slack no opportunity of gain and pleasure; but God tells us to deny ourselves; take up our cross; renounce the world and follow Him. Beware of your alliances. They matter to God.

Quote for the Day: "No deadlier self set up than for a man to keep alliance with the enemies who intends to steal, kill and destroy." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please forgive wherever I've compromised my loyalty to You. Help me to discern the subtle temptations of the world's values and priorities. Strengthen my resolve to stand firm in my faith, even when it means swimming against the tide. May my friendship with You be my greatest treasure, and may I never trade it for the fleeting pleasures of the world — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
