Undeserving

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, July 24, 2024

Today’s Text:  Ephesians 2:1-10

Key Verse: Ephesians 2:4 (ESV): "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us."

I once read a story of an unnamed mother who once approached Napoleon Bonaparte, the Emperor of France from 1804 to 1815. She came seeking pardon for her son who had committed a certain offense twice, and justice demanded death. “But I don’t ask for justice,” the mother explained. “I plead for mercy.” “But your son does not deserve mercy,” Napoleon replied. “Sir,” the woman cried, “it would not be mercy if he deserved it, and mercy is all I ask for.” At this, the emperor decided to have mercy, and he spared the woman’s son.

This story reveals a profound truth about the way God's mercy works. God's mercy towards us is never based on what we deserve. Our text today is a reminder that we were dead in our sins, unable to save ourselves. Yet, God showed us mercy, making us alive in Christ. His mercy is not a reward for our good, or bad behavior, but a gift of His grace. We too are undeserving of God's mercy, but just like that mother, we can approach God, pleading for mercy. Yes, not because we deserve it, but because of His rich love and kindness. May we humbly receive His mercy and extend it to others, remembering that mercy is most needed when we least deserve it.

In what areas of your life do you need to receive mercy today? Just know that it is Satan's strategy to make us feel undeserving. Of course, our failure should lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and self-doubt, causing us to question our worthiness of God's love and forgiveness. However, the only place we can run to for mercy is never away from God but to Him. The burden of our sense of undeserving that pulls us apart and away is a lie of the devil to distort and discredit the true nature of God's character. God's mercy is not something we earn or deserve, but rather it is a gift that is freely given. Know this truth. Come to Jesus today. You will receive mercy, freedom, hope, and a deeper understanding of God's love and grace.

Action Steps: 1.) Reflect on times when you received mercy instead of justice. 2.) Extend mercy to others, even when they don't deserve it. 3.) Be grateful to God.

Quote for the Day: "Mercy and grace are counterpart gifts of God. Mercy is not getting the wrath we deserve, and grace is getting the welcome we don't deserve." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your rich mercy towards me. I acknowledge that I don't deserve Your kindness, but You shower me with love and grace anyway. Please help me to extend this same mercy to others, even when they may not deserve it. May I be a reflection of Your love and kindness in all I do — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
