Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 1:1 - 14
Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 1:2 (ESV): "Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher,
vanity of vanities! All is vanity."
The book of Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon, who had everything but realized that without God, it was all meaningless. He reflects on the futility of life and the pursuit of wealth, power, and pleasure. By live experience, Solomon understood that pursuance of things rather than God is like a person trying to hold water in their hands; no matter how hard they try, it slips through their fingers, just like the fleeting nature of earthly pursuits
The wise king's use of the phrase "Vanity upon vanity" depicts that everything in life is ultimately empty and meaningless without God. Unfortunately, up till this day, we still chase after fleeting things, thinking they will bring us happiness and fulfillment. But without a relationship with God, we will always come up empty. We have seen celebrities and successful business men who have wealth, fame, and adoration, but still struggle with depression and loneliness. This us because true peace, joy, and satisfaction can only be found in God, not in material possessions or earthly pursuits. This is a fundamental truth that can be easy to forget in a world that often prioritizes wealth, status, and power.
As the Bible says in Psalm 16:11, "You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." Also, in Matthew 6:33, we are admonished to, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Remembering that true fulfillment comes from God, not things, can help us stay grounded and focused on what truly matters in life, and help us eschew vanity.
Quote for the Day: "Chasing after the wind will leave you breathless and empty, but seeking after God will bring you peace and fulfillment." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for your word that reminds us that pursuits outside of you lead to vanity. Please help me to see the vanity in the things of this world and to seek after you, the one who gives true meaning and purpose to life. May my pursuits be guided by your wisdom and my heart filled with your presence — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
