Violence Against the Kingdom

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 23, 2024

Today’s Text:  Matthew 11:11-17

Key Verse: Matthew 11:12 (ESV): "From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force."

This verse is often misunderstood, but in context, Jesus is pointing out the intense spiritual battle surrounding the kingdom of God. Of which the "violence" refers to the anger of zealous opposers and enemies dedicated to preventing people from entering and advancing the kingdom. Literally, the text means: since the beheading of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to all jinds of strong opposition from the hands of violent people who have been raiding or attacking it.

It was important that our Lord sound this timely and timeless caution so that each believer recognizes the intensity of the spiritual battle we face in our life of/in the kingdom. And, as such, respond with befitting fervent prayer and dedication. This should include the way we prioritize seeking God's kingdom and righteousness above all other things (Matthew 6:33). Especially when to keep us in perseverance despite obstacles and oppositions, knowing that the kingdom we seek is worth fighting for.

The kingdom of heaven (not in heaven) refers to the church as God's rule on earth. Many half baked and armchair preachers and teachers have deluded majority about this text. But beware! Because no believer fits the description of the violent in it. If you think you do, then read the words of our Lord in Luke 9:55 when He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of." The original word rendered violence and violent in the text has no fit in Christ or anyone who follows Him. They represent evil and darkness, and, it is not just physical, it is also spiritual. It represents intense opposition and conflict surrounding God's kingdom's advancement on earth.

That is why John suffered imprisonment and beheading. Missionaries are imprisoned and beheaded today. Earliest apostles faced persecution and opposition. Genuine pastors and Christians also do today. They question our authority and reject our message. We are opposed by empires and modern ideologies. We face imprisonment, and even death. Our churches are attacked, and destroyed. Social media is filled with bullying and scoffs against the church. Our evangelists face opposition, intimidation, and arrest in some places. The Boko Haram and ISIS are examples of the violent today, and the physical harm and destruction they cause against Christians and churches are done to take the kingdom from us by force.

Action Steps: Recognize the intensity of the spiritual battle and respond with fervent prayer and dedication. Be deliberate about passionately pursuing the kingdom of God. Advance the kingdom of God with courage and boldness.

Quote for the Day: "In the face of all satanic anger, and despite opposition and challenges, we can be of good cheer because our Lord conquers." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Lord, empower me to seek your kingdom with urgency and zeal. Give me the courage to persevere in the face of challenges and the passion to advance your kingdom. May I be a force for your glory, raiding the darkness with the light of your love — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
