Walking and Living out the Truth

Today’s Scripture Threshings for Monday, February 11 , 2019

Today’s Text: 3 John 1-12

Key Verse: ”For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth.” (vs. 3, ESV)

Our devotional thoughts today are coming from the shortest book in the New Testament; but brevity certainly does not limit its content. For it comes to us with one of the richest admonitions of all time. Written by Apostle John around 85-95 A.D. when believers grappled with the need to demonstrate their faith as a weapon to fighting cultural resistance; but it is very pertinent to us today who live in/with same realities.

Among the four key personalities of the book are Gaius and Diotrephes — one has a testimony of exemplary living while the other has the opposite. One held firmly and gladsomely to the truth of Christ, and was also living it out in a daily walk that showed him as a public example while the other did not. The apostle‘s heart was gladdened even as Christ’s is that though Diotrephes showed a bad example, the world have men like brother Gaius who still live in the truth and truth is in them.

Christianity is a heart-deep walk with God which must supersede mere churchianity and religiosity — which put people in performance of duties. It’s a daily walking worthy before the Lord and the world. It calls for a consciousness that God desires "truth in the inward parts" (Psalm 51:6), and not just religiosity that do not go a skin deep. Is your walk with God beaming the light from a heart that’s filled with lovingly and joyfully embraced of the truth of God's Word? Are you determined to live its practical implications of your faith out in a consistent and complimentary walk? Has it captivated your heart to the point that it flows over and into the decisions you make and the way you live? Or are you like Diotrephes who portrayed another life critically indicative of odious secrecy, in-genuine faith, self-indulgence, selfishness, hypocrisy and divisiveness? Is the truth in you? Let the concluding words of this elder apostle guide your heart today: for “Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.” (v.11).

Quote for the Day: “Christianity is reduced to a mere religiosity and churchianity when it only touched your mouth and not your act, your skin and not your heart.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to be your living light in the world. Let my life portray my active faith and reflect your truth. In Jesus’ most precious name. Amen.
