Today’s Text: Genesis 17:1-14
Key Verses: Genesis 17:1 (ESV): “When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.”
The scripture before us today is the first time and place we find God revealing Himself as El Shaddai, "the God Almighty.” This self revealed personality came along, on purpose, with a divine demand placed upon Abraham, and invariably upon us. God wanted to establish the fact that a man can walk this fallen difficult world of frailty and imperfection and shine through and true with His almighty power behind him—hence, the instruction to “walk before me.”
The earth, by its nature, since the Fall has become a ruthless place of blames and blemishes. Imperfection has almost become a second nature of humanity, and that was evident in every human including the great patriarch of faith Abram and madam Sarai. But in order for God to begin a new covenant with them, it becomes important to establish two precursory commands: Walk before me. Be blameless. This command was reiterated by Jesus in Matthew 5:48 when He commanded us to we should be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.
Humanly speaking, perfection is not possible. And then when we now come before a “alholy” God—even when we excel by all human standards of righteousness, it is nothing but filthy rags before Him(Isaiah 64:6) for there is ‘none righteous (Romans 3:10). But this is what walking before Him lightens the way. It is a figure of speech that shows intentionality that we are before God wherever we go, and understand life as a walk before the Holy God. This consciousness releases the almighty power of the finished work of Jesus Christ on us—something more than human goodness Something that makes the inputted righteousness of God become more evident daily in our lives. That’s what happens when we learn to walk before God with a pure heart of obedience each day.
Quote for the Day: “To walk before God means something more than human goodness; it is the righteousness of God in/through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: My dear Lord and Father, Please, uphold me by Your Right Hand of Righteousness, till the end; and, whenever, the temptation to sin comes my way, Please, make a way of escape. Hold my hands in continued and continual daily walk of blameless ness before You—in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
