Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 27, 2021

Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 11:1-6

Key Verse: Matthew 23:27 (KJV): “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.”

It is important we examine this important idiomatic expression and make sure that we are not in any way likable to religious folks that Jesus addressed in that way. First, what did Jesus mean by those words? A person who is inwardly corrupt or wicked while pretending or professing outward virtues or holiness is a whited sepulchre.

Putting this in context, back in the days of Christ, contact with a sepulchre is like coming in contact with leprosy or a leper. Such a person is ceremonially unclean and unfit. Passers-by might be warned by a leper by a dangling bell around his neck or by his cry, "Unclean, unclean!" But how shall a sepulchre, being a burial-place give warning? That is why they were painted with lime powder once a year, on the 15th day of the month Adar by Levitical order.

All hypocrites are worse than moving lepers. It would be better if they were because they would have given warnings and people would make clear with them. Unfortunately, they are dead within or have names as though they are alive but dead. When your life and messages are in contrast and you demonstrate the parameters of scribesu, Sadducees, and Pharisees of Jesus’ days: you are outwardly holy and inwardly rotten. You will not for sure rob the lime powder, but we would know who you are: a whites sepulchre.

A Greek myth has it that Momus, their god of ridicule has a complaint against Jupiter another Greek god for not making a window in the human heart so that it might be seen what passes within. This is not so with our true and living God. He is omniscient and needs no window. Nothing in all creation is hidden from His sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Indeed, whited or charcoaled, every thought, and wish, and intention are perfectly discerned by God. So, why not repent and let Him clean you from within.

Quote for the Day: “Humans and religious centers that symbolize the opposite of their true reality, essence and witness before a lost and dying world are nothing but garnished tombs.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please visit my heart and wash it deep with hyssop. Wash my intents and make my meditation whiter than snow, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
