Who's Been Passed Over?

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, April 23, 2024

Today’s Text: Luke 10:25-37

Key Verse: Luke 10:37 (ESV): "He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”"

As one reflects on the parable of the Good Samaritan, one would be reminded of the importance of showing compassion and kindness to those in need. Unfortunately, the religious folks, who were expected to be the most compassionate, always pass by the beaten down and robbed ones. Come to think of it: Is this not the parable of our lives? How many a needy buddies have we left to suffer? Are some so called "Samaritan," people considered outcast or unbelievers not of better kind a d affectionate disposition than us?

Who have you stopped and showed mercy? Or who's been left passed over? Friends, there are many "beaten down" by gambing, alcohol, homelessness, prison or jail term, marital problems, imigration, and illnesses today. They are in our churches, neighborhood, and society, who have been passed over and left in the ditches. There are the senior citizens who have forgotten, the children lost in the foster system, and the millions of people without Christ who are all crying out for help next to Christian desk at work, or block at home, or even next to our church buildings. They are all beaten down and left almost dead in sin; but O how we pass them over.

Today's meditation puts a question before us: not "what will happen to us if we don't help?" but "what will happen to them if we don't?" Let us consider our own lives, and ask: Who have we passed by recently? Who have we ignored or overlooked? Today’s text challenges us to see humanity in everyone and be willing to take action to help those in need. We must be that priceless ones who stop and show mercy, who bind up the wounds of the hurting, and who demonstrate the love of God to a world in need.

Quote for the Day: "May we be the oasis in the ditch, the refuge for the forgotten, and the compassion that heals the broken. For in the depths of another's darkness, our kindness can be the light that lightens their journey and rewrites their story." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please open our eyes to see the needs around us and give us the courage to take necessary action. May we be the Good Samaritans needed in our way, work and world today, showing Your love and compassion to all — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
