Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, November 10, 2023
Today’s Text: Luke 24:33-43
Key Verse: Luke 24:38 (NKJV): “And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?”
Whereas the words, "Peace be unto you!" or “Shalom” were ordinary, common place or day-to-day salutation of Jewish people at meeting or parting, And, it is a cognate with the Arabic “salaam” and Yoruba “S’alafia ni?!” However, those words comes to us in much deeper and different dimensions in the manner in which our Lord used them in today’s passage. Therefore, it is important that we understand just what those words mean in the mind and way of Jesus Christ.
Like most people’s heart today, the hearts of Christ’s disciples had passed or were passing through deepest distress. They had lost their Master, Lord and Friend; and that meant more than anything else. To them, they had lost their cause, purpose, future and hopes; and were therefore afflicted with an overwhelming grief amidst an unexplainable liveliest agitation. Aren’t we sometimes and often like this?! Don’t get in and out of some mental states in which blighted hopes struggle with darkest fears; and we tremble to our very soul depths?
So, you can imagine what it means when the Lord, who is all that they needed (and all we needed) above all things, in His divine help and wisdom, stepped in and say, "Peace be unto you!" Those were the very word that they, and we, needed to be breathed into our fasting lungs, and spoken to our weary hearts. To them, it was not not just a formal salutation. It was a profound spiritual peace that transcends any possible human experience. You will understand this even more when you place this understanding in the context of its proceeding question from Jesus: “Why are you troubled? Okay, you try and respond rhetorically: aren’t you troubled for mere comfort or gratification that is very short-lived; or broken promises from broken men; satisfaction that is based on ignorance of ourselves, which would before long be exposed; or the quiet of indifference or unbelief that must soon be broken up. The peace of Christ is not what any of these can or should touch.
Quote for the Day: “Christ’s peace always transcends all understanding, and it always guards our hearts and minds. No one can find that peace who fails to find Jesus Christ.“
Prayer: Dear God, I am grateful that, in the midst of life’s deepest struggles, you speak Your peace to me. I pray that ask you please give me all around peace in my mind, body, soul and spirit; so that I am calm, collected and tranquil at all times even as I traverse this awful world. Help me to find rest, and to relax in Your word — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
