Our Text: Acts 1:6-11
Key Verses: Acts 1:11 (KJV ): “Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
The medical emergency that delayed yesterday’s post up till now has turned around to be a double blessing. We shall have yesterday’s and today’s devotional guide back to back. I suggest you use the first for a midday meditation, and the latter for your bedtime meditation. It’s a reminder to us that delay is a blessing in disguise, and is not necessarily a denial.
We have several angelic appearances in the Bible; but the episode in this series is unique. The angelic question “Why stand ye gazing up into heaven?!” may be treated as a rhetorical question that doesn’t need a response but an action—a deliberate jolting of the disciples from their confusion or surprise, and an exhortation to get to work for Jesus instead of just waiting and watching.
The power He promised them in verse 8 is as sure as already given: so why stand ye?! Your are to be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Why stand ye! This is a reminder to today’s believers not to dwell or tarry on the mountain of experience rather step out in to the valley of action where service is needed. Standing symbolizes delay of the endowment of the Holy Spirit’s power; an evidence of non-readiness to get the job of being witnesses done; a mark that they were wasting time. It’s applicable to us today: we already have all the encouragement that we needed—what are we waiting for, but to reach out.
Quote for the Day: “If we took more time to focus on His work, rather than focusing on the things that we like to work on, the church would be a different place.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Merciful Lord, you are never weary of speaking to our poor and wearied heart. Please grant me grace that, if today I hear your voice, my heart may not be hardened to step out and do your work, in Jesus name. Amen.
A Special Announcement: No Negotiation Night, the powerful interdenominational prayer vigil is Friday, June 21, 2019 by 9pm. Pray. Plan. Prepare. Publicize. Partake!
