Wisdom Better than Strength

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Saturday, June 1, 2019

Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 9:11-18

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 9:16 (ESV): “But I say that wisdom is better than might, though the poor man’s wisdom is despised and his words are not heard.

As we begin a new month today, one basic ingredient that all of us need on the journey is wisdom. Wisdom beats the strong and sets the weak at vantages. A small store owner was being pressured to sell his store to the owners of a large department store who had bought every other store on the block, except his. Frustrated by the man’s refusal to sell, they eventually opened their huge store on either side of the small one, with big banners full length on both sides of the small store, proclaiming in huge letters “GRAND OPENING.” Feeling frustrated, the small store owner resorted to wisdom, which outwitted the large department store. Below the grand opening sign, across the front of his small store, the man put up a small banner over his door: “MAIN ENTRANCE.”

Today’s text reveals that, though our generation despise wisdom—because natural men are generally vain and foolish, and have greater value for appearances than for true worth—but you can bring to pass that which you could never do by military or monetary strength. Fortunately, ours is a promise that: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given” (James 1:5) God is the source of pure and true wisdom. When you find Him, and get His wisdom, He gives you dominion and just insight into all facts of life.

Quote for the Day: “Just as adversity is a greater teacher than prosperity; so is wisdom than wealth. Wealth pampers the mind to its faults; but wisdom trains and strengthens its spur.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, Give me your wisdom and a heart of discernment. Speak your instruction into my heart and my circumstances, and give me the strength and courage to follow through, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
