With God

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, April 13, 2023

Today’s Text: Matthew 19:23-30

Key Verses: Matthew 19:26 (ESV): “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.””

The words of our key text today is perhaps the most populous religious cliché of all times. We inscribe it on our door, on car stickers, cross-stitched on pillows, hung on walls, office decors and on lips of most religious people when they have a task that they think is bigger than their preparation, expectations or capabilities. No doubt that this is a good phrase: it pomps a lot of zest and encouragement and speaks of God’s absolute power and control when man is stocked up in difficult corners of life.

The greatest thrust of this verse is its clear  echo of the weakness and/or inability of man. Don’t forget, the “this is impossible” refers to the quest of the people on “Who then can be saved?” This reminds us the futility of man or of human efforts when it comes to salvation and everything it stands for. Man is incapable of understanding or shaping a path of escape for himself. Only God has the answer. To Sarah and Abraham’s doubt, God said, “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” (Gen 18:14) Job in his distress told God, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:3) When our Lord, himself, was faced with the agony of death at Gethsemane, he prayed, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you…” (Mk 14:36) God wants to remind us of His absolute sovereignty and incontestable power over all situations. And, especially how we should have profound faith in Him.

Quote for the Day: “With God all things are possible” is not a lucky number code or a magic wand to o success. But an assurance of trust in the possibility of anything that God promises He’d do.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I put my faith in You because I know that nothing is impossible with You. I know You are the same God today as You were ever, and You look out for me in Your grace. Teach me to trust You more — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
