Today’s Text: Ephesians 6:10-20
Key Verse: Ephesians 6:12 (ESV): "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places."
I know that many of us have been wrestling with God or taught to do so. Perhaps we have been told to command God and probably instructed to grab God and wrestle with Him like Jacob did. But this morning, it is essential we distinguish between wrestling against things that hinder our life and communication with God and wrestling with God Himself. The former is a biblical mandate from today's text, while engaging in the latter is unscriptural and can lead to spiritual crippling. Can any mortal contend with God? Are we going to instruct him? But we have been given authority not just to wrestle against powers of the enemy but to overcome.
Instead of wrestling with God's ways in our lives, we are admonished here to wrestle in prayer against the things and powers of this world that work against the design of God in our lives. We are to submit to God but fight the devil. And, we have already been made more than conquerors through Christ. James 4:7-8 says, "Submit yourselves, then, to God [do not wrestle with . Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God, and he will come near to you." God's children don't struggle with Him, they submit to His authority and sovereignty; and by that they resist the devil's temptations and schemes.
Apply this principle in your daily life and you will never wrestle amiss. Instead, you will daily trust God's wisdom and power to overcome the enemy's tactics in your life. In this way, you are complete in Christ, not wrestling with the One whose will in your life or for you is always perfect and never evil. His will for us is always perfect and immutable. The one we are to resist is the devil. We are right and have right to do so. Don't make yourself a spineless wrestler; instead, put up a courageous fight in prayer against your enemy.
Quote for the Day: "Absolute surrender to Christ is central to the Christian life. It is surrendering one's will, desires, and life to God's guidance and control, trusting in His sovereignty and goodness and never struggling with Him." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I come before you today, surrendering my life fully to you. I yield my thoughts, emotions, and actions to your guidance and control. I renounce the devil's influence and reject his lies. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, that I may walk in your truth and grace. Help me to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow you daily. Abd as I surrender to you, Lord, I claim my victory over the enemy's schemes. I put on your armor, standing firm against the devil's attacks — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
