Today’s Text: 1 Peter 2:7-10
Key Verse: 1 Peter 2:9 (KJV): “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”
There is something worse than a mistaken identity. It is when you don’t know your worth at all. A college student was believed to have survived a bus crash when she actually died in the accident, whereas another student presumed to be dead was actually in a hospital being treated for head wounds and mistaken for the dead one. When the surviving student came out of her coma, the deceased parents who have maintained needless vigils realized that the girl they had thought was their daughter was actually another person.
Many Christians miss the identity point and are tossed about with a sense of lost or mistaken identity. This, in the sight of God is a serious matter so much so that the apostle Peter passionately and earnestly stress the point of our spiritual worth in Christ. We carry the human body but we are never ordinary. The apostle reveals that we are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, who show forth the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his marvellous light.
We are like the rock in the hand of a little boy whose father sought to teach his life’s worth. He was given a rock and sent to a market to sell it. He was instructed not to say a word; but only raise two fingers to whoever asked for its worth. A woman who wanted to place the rock in her garden saw his two fingers and offered $2. A museum curator saw the same two fingers and offered to pay $200. A precious stone dealer saw the fingers and offered $200,000; and then another $2M. What’s going on is deeper than the boy ever knew. In his hand is a meteorite, a very peculiar rock, rarer than gold, platinum, diamonds or emeralds.
Friends, you are worth more than you ever think. Your world has no idea the treasure you carry in earthen vessel. You are priceless. Like the boy’s father, God wants us to know who we are, and what we are truly worth. You are not what people say or think you are. You are what the master says. You are the focus of His love. He chose you in Him that you should be priceless and without blame before Him in love.
Quote for the Day: “When your value and worth come from Christ, then you are far worth more than a meteorite, a very peculiar rock, rarer than gold, platinum, diamonds or emeralds.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, how I thank You for having fearfully and wonderfully created me. Thank You for giving me worth in Your eyes. Help me live as the one You uniquely intended me to be. Help me abide instead of strive. Help me live peacefully and joyfully as heirs to Your Kingdom and co-heirs with Christ — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
