Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, August 4, 2024
Today’s Text: Matthew 10:24-31
Key Verse: Matthew 10:29 (NIV): Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care."
While I pray for one of my spiritual daughters who has been beaten down by life's storms, the Lord brought this text before me and spoke great comfort to me about her and others like her. Jesus was sending out His twelve disciples to preach, heal, and cast out demons. There is a lot before then than meets the eyes. Life wasn't going to be a bed of roses. It was therefore important that He warns them of the dangers they'll face and encourages them to trust in God's care, using the example of sparrows to illustrate God's attention to detail and care for His creatures. Sparrows were considered insignificant and cheap, yet God knows when one of them falls to the ground. If God so cares for such small creature as a sparrow, He'll certainly care for His children.
God in His wisdom and mindfulness of us has sent this text to us today as a reminder that He values and cares for each of us, no matter how insignificant we may feel. We can always trust in His provision, protection, and guidance. Whoever you are and whatever your greatest fear or need may be — even if you are, at the moment: struggling to make ends meet; struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health issues; facing difficulties in personal relationships, feelings of loneliness, and social isolation; in financial struggles, debt, and economic insecurity; feeling lost, without direction, or lacking a sense of purpose; facing chronic illness, pain, or disability; coping with the loss of a loved one, a relationship, or a significant life change; struggling with substance abuse or other addictive behaviors; in a deepened low self-esteem, self-doubt, and negative self-image; or questioning your existence, identity, or place in the world — you can find comfort in this verse, knowing that God sees your efforts and will provide for your needs.
My friends and brethren, you are more valued than you realize, more loved than you know, and more precious than you can imagine. You are a unique and special creature, made in God's image, with a purpose and plan that only you can fulfill. Your life is a precious gift, and you are loved and cherished by God. That's why you are His masterpiece, created in His image, and loved beyond measure so that He'd lay down His life for you. Knowing this truth is a major key to your freedom from defeat and despair. As you face life's turbulence and challenges, remind yourself of your worth and value in God's sight. This will bring hope, encouragement, and confidence to you. Tell that devil that is trying to dispirit you that you are valued, loved, and precious in God's eyes.
Action Steps: Reflect on the times when you felt insignificant or overlooked. Pray for trust in God's care and provision. Share this verse with someone who needs encouragement.
Quote for the Day: "God's care for us His people is not based on our value to ourselves and others, but on our value to Him and before Him." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me of Your care and attention to detail. Help me trust in Your provision and protection, even when I feel insignificant. May I find comfort in Your love and care for me — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
