Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6
Key Verse: Psalm 23:1 (ESV): “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
So far, we have journeyed with David in his pastoral experience through Psalms 23. This Psalm, doubtlessly the most populous and beloved Psalm of all. It applies the metaphor of the shepherd to describe our happy state when Jesus Christ, our Lord, is the Shepherd of our souls, in whom we trust for daily care and guidance. In the past days, we have shared the amazing joys that are ours if and when we are in the hands of such trustworthy shepherd — who, himself, is the One who made us, and we are the sheep of His pastures.
The “The Lord is my shepherd” demonstrates an unquestionable particularity of a personal relationship or experience. No one can deny another’s personal spiritual experience. Like David, we all need such confident affirmation or experience — which of course is not possible except you truly have relationship with Jesus Christ. You can only say “the Lord is my shepherd” if truly he is; lest you are a hypocrite and deceive yourself. However, if you key into the trustworthiness of the shepherd, he does not just care for the sheepfold as a whole but he pays particular attention on you as a person.
The Lord knows each of us by name and relationship with him must be personal. He knows our every needs—our uprising and down-falling, our joys and sorrows, and our fullness and emptiness; who knows all these things including every hair on our heads, is He who we suppose to follow. If you can make Him your Shepherd, then He’ll make you His sheep. And when like a sheep you ever wander away. This year, we need Jesus to lead us in His righteous paths. We pedal can't see God as Shepherd if we don't see ourselves as sheep. The more we realize how much we really need God for everything, the more we run to Him. And the more we believe the lie that we can do without Him, the more we wander and drift away from our true source.
Quote for the Day: “Sheep that flock away from the maturing pasture of a shepherd end up in slaughtering abattoir.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I ask for Your guidance. Give me the power of Your grace so that I may hear Your divine instructions. Remove any barriers that keep me from drawing near to You. Open my heart and clear my vision so that I may follow Your path—in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
